The Day I (Almost) Went Viral - (and nothing actually changed)
Jordanna Campbell | MAY 11
The other day, something very exciting happened.
I posted an 8-second video on Instagram.
Eight seconds.
It wasn’t educational.
It wasn’t inspirational.
It didn’t involve a complex yoga sequence, a profound quote, or even particularly good lighting.
It was simply this:
“Highlight of the week: I went out without a jumper… and stayed warm.”
That’s it.
No plot twist.
No deep message.
No slow-motion transitions.
And then… the views started going up.
1,000.
2,000.
5,000.
At this point, I was already emotionally invested.
10,000.
15,000.
20,000.
We peaked somewhere around 25,000.
Which, for me, is… enormous.
To put that into context, I usually get somewhere between 200 and 1,000 views.
So yes — this was big.
Not “move to LA and hire a manager” big.
But definitely “refreshing Instagram more than is strictly necessary” big.
Nothing changed.
I didn’t wake up the next day with a new sense of purpose.
My life did not transform overnight.
No doors mysteriously swung open.
Instagram did not contact me personally to say:
“Jordanna, we’ve been watching. This jumper-free moment has really moved us.”
It was just… a nice thing that happened.
Exciting.
A bit surreal.
And then… life carried on exactly as before.
This is exactly how we imagine yoga will work.
We think:
When I finally get that pose…
Headstand.
Crow.
(Insert whichever one currently feels just out of reach.)
Then something will shift.
I’ll feel more confident.
More accomplished.
More… something.
And to be fair — you do feel something.
There’s a moment.
A little burst of:
“Oh! There it is!”
It’s exciting.
It might even be joyful.
But then?
You get down from the pose.
And you still have to answer your emails.
And decide what to have for dinner.
And remember where you put your keys.
Your life… carries on.
If it’s not the views…
And it’s not the pose…
What are we actually doing here?
I think it’s this:
It’s not about the moment itself.
It’s about the person you become while moving towards it.
That 8-second video?
It didn’t come out of nowhere.
It came from months (years) of:
Showing up.
Posting things that 300 people watched.
Posting things that 500 people watched.
Posting things that I thought were better… that did worse.
And doing it anyway.
Same with yoga.
You don’t suddenly become someone different when you get the pose.
You become that person in the process of trying.
In the wobbling.
The falling out of it.
The deciding to go again.
Of all the things that could have “done well”…
It was me.
Without a jumper.
In mild British springtime.
Staying warm.
Not my years of teaching experience.
Not my carefully planned classes.
Not my thoughtful cues.
No.
My ability to make the correct clothes decision on one day particular day.
We don’t get to control what “lands”.
Not on Instagram.
Not in yoga.
Not really in life.
You can do everything “right”…
And the thing that resonates might be something small, ordinary, almost accidental.
Very exciting.
Slightly ridiculous.
Not exactly viral.
And, in the grand scheme of things?
About as life-changing as finally managing crow pose.
Which is to say:
Lovely.
Satisfying.
Worth celebrating.
But not the point.
